Eating an egg every day: This is what happens in your body when you do.
Many people enjoy one or more eggs every day. Studies show surprising effects on the heart, brain, and nutrient absorption. Read on to find out how much egg consumption is safe and when caution is advised.
Some swear by eggs as a protein powerhouse – others, however, are somewhat averse to them due to their relatively high cholesterol content. But that's not nearly as big a problem as once thought.
These are the health benefits of eggs.
Eggs are packed with protein, especially in the yolk. This protein is easily digestible and almost entirely absorbed by the body. They also contain various vitamins, including the fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K, of which vitamin A is particularly essential for vision. Water-soluble B vitamins, as well as calcium, sodium, potassium, phosphorus, and iron, are also present. However, the specific nutrients in eggs can vary depending on the farming methods and size of the laying hens.
Too many eggs, too much cholesterol?
Despite their many health benefits, eggs are often criticized for their high cholesterol content. However, this is generally harmless when consumed in moderation: our bodies can regulate and break down cholesterol themselves, so eating one or two eggs a day is not a problem for most people.
However, problems can arise if a genetic metabolic disorder is present, and cholesterol levels cannot be regulated. People with pre-existing conditions such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, a stroke, or a previous heart attack should also be cautious with their egg consumption and consult a doctor if in doubt.
How many eggs can you eat per day?
The available data is not entirely conclusive, as some analyses are contradictory. A study conducted in China with half a million adults and published in the journal "Heart" found that people who regularly eat an egg have a 28 percent lower risk of suffering a brain hemorrhage. According to the study, consuming one egg per day may also reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease.
However, another study published in the summer of 2020 in the "European Heart Journal" found that daily egg consumption increases the risk of brain hemorrhage by 1.25.
The German Nutrition Society (DGE) does not issue a specific recommendation for egg consumption, but suggests a guideline of about two to three eggs per week. Generally speaking, however, eggs fit into a balanced diet and contain several healthy nutrients.
