Healthy tips: These 3 fruits do not belong in your breakfast muesli

Muesli is a classic breakfast food. Many people top it with fresh fruit. However, experts say that some popular fruits should be avoided.

According to several sources, anyone who wants to make a healthy muesli should include whole grains in at least half of it. Oat flakes, for example, are high in protein and therefore keep you feeling full for longer. Oat flakes also help prevent blood sugar spikes. Flaxseed, buckwheat, or spelt flakes are also good choices. Mixing three to four tablespoons of these grains into your muesli is a great way to start your day off right.

More crunch with nuts

A good muesli also includes nuts or seeds. Adding walnuts, for example, will boost your omega-3 levels. Almonds and other seeds can also be delicious. However, moderation is key. While nuts, seeds, and kernels are rich in healthy fats, they are also high in calories. To prevent your crunchy muesli from becoming a hidden source of weight gain, DAK Health recommends limiting your toppings to a small handful.

Fruit for refreshment

Fruit adds vibrant color to the plate and, thanks to its fructose content, provides a sweet note in the morning. But caution is advised when choosing fruit for breakfast, explains nutrition expert Dr. Matthias Riedl. Fructose is also a sugar that the body must process and break down. Therefore, the quantity of fruit is the primary factor. According to Riedl, a bowl of blueberries is more acceptable than a bowl of grapes, as grapes contain significantly more fructose. Fruits like mango and pineapple are just as sweet and therefore full of fructose as grapes, says the nutrition expert.

The perfect fruit for your muesli

To prevent blood sugar levels from spiking at breakfast, Riedl recommends low-sugar fruits such as papaya or berries. Apples are also acceptable, provided one doesn't overdo it with a large portion throughout the day.
