Intimate hygiene for men: 5 common mistakes – and how to do it right
Most men are reluctant to talk about intimate hygiene. They also frequently make the same mistakes. A dermatologist explains how to do it correctly.
Intimate hygiene is a topic men rarely discuss, even though many make surprisingly similar mistakes in their daily lives. From excessive hygiene to complete neglect – both can damage the sensitive skin in the intimate area. Dermatologist explains why finding the right balance is crucial.
Typical mistakes in male intimate hygiene
1. Overly aggressive cleaning
Many men resort to harsh shower gels or even antibacterial soaps. While this may sound like thorough cleansing, it irritates the skin barrier and disrupts the natural microbiome. The consequences are dryness, itching, redness, and in the worst case, eczema.
2. Intimate perfume and deodorant spray
Products designed to make the intimate area smell fresh often contain alcohol or fragrances. These can trigger allergies and chronic irritation, and may even mask infections instead of treating them.
3. Incorrect timing when shaving
Many men shave their pubic area with the same razor blades they use for their face. These blades are often dull or used without shaving cream. This promotes razor burn, ingrown hairs, and minor cuts that allow bacteria to enter more easily.
4. Less is more - misunderstood
There is also the opposing view: no cleaning at all. Those who rarely wash their genital area or foreskin risk smegma buildup. This can not only smell unpleasant but also promote inflammation and infections.
5. Tight, synthetic underwear
Synthetic materials trap heat and moisture, creating an ideal environment for fungi and bacteria. Cuts that are too tight can also promote skin irritation and minor eczema.
Finding the right balance
"The intimate area needs care just like any other area of skin, but tailored to its sensitivity," says Dr. Miriam Rehbein. She recommends:
- Gentle cleansing: Once a day with lukewarm water or a pH-neutral, perfume-free washing lotion is perfectly sufficient.
- Gentle shaving: Fresh blades, gentle lather, followed by soothing care, for example with panthenol.
- Breathable clothing: cotton or functional fabrics that wick away sweat.
- Regular skin checks: Small redness, itching or discharge are signals that should be checked by a doctor instead of being covered up with perfume.
- Intimate care: More than just hygiene
Intimate hygiene is not a matter of extra effort, but an essential part of overall skin health. Those who treat their skin with care not only prevent infections, but also increase their personal well-being.
For adjacent skin areas such as thighs or groin, which tend to be dry, lose elasticity or hyperpigmentation, body care with retinol can be beneficial.
Ultimately, the right middle ground is crucial – neither too much nor too little.
