Showering correctly: Only these 5 body parts need soap
Not all areas of the body need to be cleaned with soap when showering. It's enough to thoroughly clean five areas and wash the rest with just water – this helps keep your skin healthy.
Those who take a hot shower and lather up extensively in the morning should rethink their routine. Experts recommend washing only specific parts of the body to avoid unnecessarily stressing the skin. Showering too frequently or too vigorously can disrupt the skin's microbiome, thereby compromising its protective barrier.
Skincare in the shower: Less is more
Only these five body parts really need soap:
- hands
- feet
- armpits
- mid-back
- mid-chest
For the rest, it is recommended to use a damp washcloth. The water temperature should also not exceed 35 degrees Celsius to prevent the skin from drying out.
Experts also advise that showering every two to three days is sufficient, provided you are not sweaty or dirty. Showering too frequently can dry out the skin, as it washes away the oils and sebum that keep it supple. Furthermore, the skin's protective acid mantle can be weakened by overuse of soap or other personal care products.
