Salt is essential for life, but too much can harm your health. These eight signs indicate when you should review your salt intake.

Poor diet: These 8 symptoms indicate excessive salt intake.

Salt is an essential part of most people’s diets and also plays an important role in the body. However, many consume significantly more salt than recommended. Over time, this can strain the heart, kidneys, and circulatory system. How can you tell if your body is already suffering from an excess of salt? These eight warning signs provide clues.

Salt: The most important source of sodium and chloride

Table salt consists primarily of sodium chloride. Around 90 per cent of our sodium and chloride intake comes from salt, and both minerals are essential, according to the Federal Centre for Nutrition.

  • Sodium regulates the water and acid-base balance, influences blood pressure, and enables the transmission of nerve impulses and muscle movements.
  • Chloride is a component of stomach acid and, therefore, important for digestion and protection against pathogens.

Foods with high salt content

  • Bread and rolls: the largest source of salt (almost a third of daily intake)
  • Sausages and meat products: e.g., ham, salami, Kasseler (smoked pork loin)
  • Cheese: especially Gorgonzola, Gouda, sheep’s cheese
  • Snack foods and ready meals: often hidden salt traps

Salt plays an important role in food production, acting as a preservative and a flavor enhancer. In cooking, salt not only enhances the flavor of dishes but also stabilizes dough and influences the structure of baked goods.

How much salt is too much?

The German Nutrition Society (DGE) recommends consuming no more than six grams of salt per day. This corresponds to about one level teaspoon. You should opt for iodised and fluoridated table salt, as sea salt without iodine enrichment contains hardly any more iodine than regular salt.

However, the reality is different: According to the “German Health Study” (DEGS), around 70 per cent of women and 80 per cent of men exceed this guideline value. For many, daily intake is significantly higher, often exceeding 15 grams.

8 warning signs of excessive salt consumption

Excess salt often goes unnoticed for a long time. However, the body sends clear signals when the balance is disrupted. You should be aware of these eight signs:

1. Fluctuating blood pressure

Sodium, the main component of salt, binds water in the body. This increases the volume of fluid in the bloodstream and, consequently, blood pressure. If your readings are frequently above normal, excessive salt consumption could be a contributing factor.

2. Constant thirst and frequent urge to urinate

Do you feel like you constantly need to drink? Salt draws water from cells to maintain the body’s balance. The result: intense thirst and more frequent trips to the toilet, as excess fluid is excreted.

3. Unexplained weight gain

High salt consumption can indirectly lead to increased calorie intake, as salt stimulates appetite and reduces feelings of satiety. It can also cause tissue water retention. This quickly becomes noticeable on the scale, even without an increase in body fat.

4. Swollen hands and feet

Do you notice tight rings or pinching shoes in the evening? Salt binds water, which is then deposited between the cells. This leads to swelling, especially in the extremities.

5. Headaches

Too much salt can cause dehydration, which is a common trigger for headaches. The lack of fluids can change blood vessels in the brain, leading to sharp or throbbing pain.

6. Bloating

An imbalanced fluid level can also be felt in the abdomen. Excess fluid can cause bloating and an uncomfortable feeling of tightness.

7. Kidney stones

The kidneys regulate the body’s salt levels. Regularly consuming too much salt strains the organs. In the long term, this increases the risk of kidney problems, including the formation of painful kidney stones.

8. Decreasing sense of taste

If food seems increasingly bland to you and you always have to add more seasoning, this could be a warning sign: your sense of taste is adapting to a high-salt diet and demanding more and more.
