Why 3 p.m. is the perfect time to eat dates

Many people are familiar with the afternoon slump. But dates could be surprisingly well-suited to this time of day – and offer more than one might initially suspect.

Many people are familiar with that afternoon slump. Concentration and energy levels drop, and reaching for a snack seems inevitable. But surprisingly, an unassuming piece of dried fruit could be just the thing to help.

Why dates provide energy in the afternoon

We're talking about dates. As the health portal Health.com reports, nutrition experts particularly recommend them as an afternoon snack around 3 p.m., when many people experience a noticeable drop in energy levels. Dates provide readily available energy, support digestion, and contain important minerals such as potassium.

The energy boost is due to their high content of natural carbohydrates. Depending on the variety, dates contain approximately 5-18 grams of carbohydrates each, primarily sugar. This is processed by the body more quickly than starch or fiber, providing a short-term energy boost. As a snack between meals, dates can help bridge the afternoon slump without reaching for sweets.

Dates before and after exercise: energy for muscles and regeneration

Dates are also beneficial for athletic activities. Before training, they provide energy for working muscles, while their potassium content supports muscle function. After training, the carbohydrates they contain help replenish glycogen stores. This effect can be enhanced when combined with protein.

Besides providing energy, dates also aid digestion. Just three pitted Medjool dates deliver almost five grams of fiber. This supports regular digestion and, according to recent studies, can promote the growth of beneficial gut bacteria. A specific time for eating them isn't crucial, but snacking between meals is generally well-tolerated.

Despite their health benefits, dates should be eaten mindfully. Even natural sugars can raise blood sugar levels when consumed in large amounts. Experts therefore recommend combining dates with protein-rich foods – such as yogurt, cottage cheese, or nut butter. This slows down sugar absorption and promotes a more even feeling of fullness.
