Coffee Benefits for Women: What New Research Reveals
A study suggests that regular coffee consumption may support healthy aging in women.
It is well known that drinking this beverage in moderation offers health benefits. For example, regular consumption is said to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and help prevent type 2 diabetes.
Coffee study with 47,000 women: Surprising result
According to a study from Harvard University in the USA, regular coffee consumption, especially among women, is said to contribute to healthy aging without dementia, diabetes, or cancer. The study suggests that drinking up to 2.5 cups of coffee per day helps women reach age 70+ without memory and mobility problems.
The study used data from 47,000 women who had provided information about their health, lifestyle, and diet at regular intervals since 1984.
One to two and a half cups a day help women age better.
According to the study, every cup of coffee per day increases the likelihood of staying fit and mentally healthy in old age by five percent. However, there is a limit – it shouldn't exceed 2.5 cups. The recommended maximum of 2.5 cups per day also improved general health aspects by two to five percent.
By 2016, 3,700 of 47,000 women met all the criteria for healthy aging. These women, aged 45 to 60, consumed 315 mg of caffeine per day, roughly equivalent to three cups of coffee. They got about 80 percent of their caffeine from coffee.
The caffeine in coffee is crucial.
Caffeine from other beverages such as cola or energy drinks, on the other hand, has no positive effect on healthy aging. By contrast, drinking one glass daily reduces the overall probability of healthy aging by 19 percent.
The probability of meeting all the criteria for healthy aging, without memory, mobility, or psychological problems, also decreased by 25 percent.
Even decaffeinated coffee or tea cannot achieve similar effects on healthy aging as coffee. Study leader Dr. Mahdavi says: "The results suggest that caffeinated coffee – unlike tea or decaffeinated coffee – can uniquely support the aging process, thus preserving mental and physical functions."
