How to Make Coffee Easier on a Sensitive Stomach
Coffee is part of everyday life for many, but it can upset the stomach. With a few simple adjustments, you can often make it more tolerable.
People with sensitive stomachs should try drinking espresso. This is the recommendation of certified nutritionist Birgit Warnecke from the German Coffee Association in Hamburg.
Because of the roasting and preparation process, espresso contains fewer substances that could irritate a sensitive stomach than other coffee preparations.
"The widely communicated advice to switch to long-roasted coffee for better 'tolerability' is a myth based on outdated knowledge," says Warnecke.
While it does lead to greater breakdown of chlorogenic acids, these acids in roasted coffee or in the cup do not upset the stomach at all, and may even protect it; so the claim that long-roasted coffee is better tolerated is outdated.
It's best not to drink coffee on an empty stomach.
"If you suffer from an already compromised stomach, you should avoid drinking coffee – as well as many other foods – on an empty stomach," the expert also advises.
Adding milk is also a good idea, as it reduces direct contact between coffee and the stomach lining.
Since caffeine stimulates digestion, it is sometimes even better tolerated than caffeinated drinks. It is, of course, a particularly good alternative for those who wish to avoid the stimulating and energizing effects of caffeine.
