Why Music Makes Us Feel: The Emotional Science Explained
Music can influence mood, breathing, and heartbeat. But slow music doesn't automatically calm you down, and fast music doesn't necessarily mean stress. What matters isn't just what's being played – but how our brain interprets it.
Four notes are enough: B–A–C–H
Johann Sebastian Bach knew nothing of functional MRI, neural networks, or heart rate variability. Nevertheless, he created music that has moved people for centuries. His own name could be translated into four notes: B-A-C-H.
Music reaches us through our ears. Its effect, however, doesn't end there. Sound waves are converted into electrical signals in the inner ear. The brain analyzes rhythm, pitch, timbre, and volume. At the same time, it links sounds to memories, expectations, and feelings. Only then does sound become a personal experience.
Activation is not the same as stress.
Certain acoustic characteristics have a relatively predictable effect: a fast tempo, strong rhythmic accents, high volume, or crescendos can increase breathing, attention, and physical activation. Slower, quieter passages and pauses tend to be less activating.
But heightened arousal doesn't have to be unpleasant. Techno or rave music can energize the body while simultaneously calming emotions. Conversely, a tranquil composition can evoke memories and stir a person deeply. Even the Goldberg Variations aren't uniformly "calming music": between the aria and the fast, contrapuntally dense variations, the stimuli are very different.
Even Prince, Miles Davis, or rap music cannot be reliably categorized as either stimulating or calming. The musical pieces, interpretations, and personal stories are too diverse.
The brain hears one's own biography.
In a study with 144 female music students, preferred stimulating and preferred calming music reduced tension and anxiety to a similar degree. However, when the music was not desired, the calming option performed better.
A small study with fans of extreme metal music revealed another apparent contradiction: their heart rate remained elevated during the music. Despite this, they did not become more irritable; instead, positive feelings and a sense of activity increased.
This shows that subjective calming and autonomous calming are not the same. A person can feel internally calm even though their circulatory system remains activated.
What science cannot yet promise
However convincing individual studies may sound, a meta-analysis of 14 experiments involving 706 healthy adults found no reliable overall effect of music on recovery after acute stress. The results are also inconsistent for self-selected music, specific tempo ranges, and changes in heart rate, HRV, blood pressure, or cortisol.
Therefore, we cannot claim that a particular genre of music reliably normalizes the autonomic nervous system, protects against heart attacks, or improves prognosis. The best evidence is that music can influence mood, anxiety, and emotional experience in the short term. Physical reactions are possible, but they vary from person to person and are not always consistent.

Therefore, don't choose music based on supposedly heart-healthy genres. A more helpful question is: What do I need right now – calming, energizing, comforting, focused, or a break from rumination? Familiar and beloved music can be an easily accessible form of emotional self-regulation. It doesn't replace treatment, but it can change a moment.
The music remains the same. The brain creates a story from it. And the heart responds – not to a genre, but to the whole person.
